Milkweed

milkweed

This herbaceous perennial is a common sight in fields and alongside roads. It is an important nectar source for bees and other insects, and a food source for Monarch butterfly larvae. The milkweed is named for its milky juice, which contains alkaloids. Carolus Linnaeus named the genus after Asclepius, the Greek god of healing, because of the many folk-medicinal uses for the milkweed plants.
